I was actually more shocked than I was offended that Cooper first misrepresented the tradition and then proceeded to ridicule and belittle the polish people and the tradition itself. It was uncomfortable to watch during the moment when he paused for several seconds, giggled and whimsically whispered under his breath “this is just so stupid.” He looked like a highschool bully making fun of the foreign exchange student.
The sacred religious holiday Smingus Dyngus, has been celebrated since as early as the 15th century in Poland. Cooper called it “an excuse to get drunk.”
I’ve seen the Ridiculous List before. Usually Cooper uses it to point out arrogance, ignorance, and absurdity. Its clear that last night Cooper, on a national stage presented himself as arrogant, ignorant, and absurd.
I’ll never watch this show again.
